Supporting the Creation of a Dog Park

What does it mean to be supporting the creation of a dog park? Dog parks are the “in” place to be and attract pet parents to progressive communities. Some political officials are now running on the basis of supporting the creation of a dog park.

However, it takes a lot more than political clout to create a dog park. Local dog trainers can be recruited to develop responsible pet parents through the AKC S.T.A.R. puppy program and certify dogs as Canine Good Citizens. This will ensure that dog owners using the park will understand dog behavior and know how to encourage others to be responsible for positive behavior from their dogs.

Fundraisers such as dog walks, contests and dog splashes can also be used to raise money. People’s love for dogs brings them together to create a common ground across social and economic barriers to either contribute their money or their time to have a place for their dogs to play.

Dog Parks Built by Relationships

Dog parks are built by relationships. My pet parent Amelia recently visited dog parks around Columbus, Ohio.  Pooch Playground is in the Gahanna area. She was told that a family had originally donated the land which was then turned into ball fields. Unfortunately, when the fields were not being used to play ball, the “undesirables” occupied the space…and I am not talking about stray dogs.

Pooch Playground is near a busy airport where the noise can be deafening. The dogs don’t care and neither do the pet parents that are building relationships, exchanging training tips and exercising their dogs. The very presence of dogs and people during most of the day and evening hours has deterred the delinquents and vandals alike. A philosopher could ask which came first, the dog park or the relationships. Relationships built the park and the dogs and their pet parents are building relationships that enhance community life.

Scent training for dogs can be  as simple as a step-by-step mind game.  The weather outside here in the Mid Atlantic states is heavy downpours with flood alerts.  My pet parent just gave me a bath so I am not about to get muddy again so soon.

Fortunately, a positive pet trainer, Pamela Johnson, has come to the rescue with this game that we can play even after the sun starts to shine again. This is a great excuse for your pet parent to reward you with treats! Do you think you can get them to play this game with you? Let us know whether you thought this was fun.

Have you Met This Celebrity Dog Trainer?

Suryia and Roscoe
Have you met Suryia, the celebrity dog trainer at the T.I.G.E.R.S. sanctuary in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina? Well, the story is making the rounds around the internet.  I have not been able to sniff out the truth, but as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words so I will let you be the judge of  the accuracy of this viral story.
Apparently Suryia was not doing well at the rescue center.  He had no purpose in life.  His prayers were answered when an old, emaciated hound dog wandered in.  The staff named the dog Roscoe.

Suryia was drawn to Roscoe from the moment he arrived and stayed with him night and day while Roscoe regained his health.  Now the two are inseparable and really ham it up for the photographers. They play in the water together and hang out in the tree house…and just hang out.
Hamming it up for the camera

They each have a purpose now in living for each other.  Does your pet parent make sure you have a “job” so that you don’t lay around behaving neurotically, chewing your nails or chasing your tail? Have them leave a comment on how you impact other lives.
