Hi, my name is Amelia Johnson. I am a full-time pet blogger and Internet marketer making a living from this dynamic online platform and personal contacts. Through this, I feel that I can help you and  your pets live longer, healthier and happier lives.

From Hobby to Profession

Pets are my life. Right out of high school, I became a professional dog groomer. This income helped pay my college expenses as I studied Animal Science. The grooming business became so successful and I enjoyed it so much that I continued along that path…

…Until I was lured into the show horse world.  I apprenticed under a masterful horseman and together we developed World Champions for amateurs to enjoy. Training horses sounds glorious but requires long hours seven days a week, with very little time off. A traumatic experience with a raging brood mare in season gave me a new respect for life and how fragile it truly is.

I felt it was time to settle down, get married and start a new business of my own.  At that time, pet sitting was gaining respect as a profession. Many pet lovers have experience pet sitting, but additional training through Pet Sitters International and Veterinary Assistant Certification took it to a whole new level for me. I also developed my skills as a positive reinforcement dog obedience instructor.

Once again, I found myself “playing with pets” for long hours. Adding employees cut back on the “playtime” hours for me but raised the expenses, the stress of management and paperwork. Nevertheless, I continued on for 18 joyful and tearful years as my clients’ pets became my own in my heart and I also experienced their life as babies through their death.

Like so many people, I grew tired of worrying how the bills would get paid every month What if I got sick and couldn’t work? I knew I could never create the life I wanted and deserved unless I found a way to partner with others. There was nothing worse than going to bed every night with the feeling that what I was reaching for felt so far away.

I knew that I wanted more flexibility in my life; the ability to create more than a “hobby” income; to work with people; and to further my leadership skills. I wanted to be involved in an industry that was growing fast, was recession proof and could provide an on-going residual income… something that would pay me over and over again for the work that I did one time. So I decided to do something about it and started searching.

Call it divine…my American Eskimo dog Blizzard was the catalyst for me to open the door to a new way of life. Blizzard was suffering from Cushing’s disease. After a few years of using western medicine to maintain his life, my mind was opened by a holistic veterinarian who revealed alternative therapies and the importance of food as a medicine.

Unfortunately, the medication that Blizzard had been on destroyed all chance of reversal of his disease through  nutrition. The most that I could do for him was provide him with the best food on the market. But it had to be a food that he liked and would eat readily.  Blizzard sampled over a dozen foods: raw, frozen, canned and kibble. The one that he preferred was from a privately-owned company.  I trusted  his decision but wanted to be sure that the company had integrity.

As a pet professional for over 30 years, I was shocked that I was only vaguely aware of what was going on in the pet food industry. I had trusted the big brand names. My veterinarians told me that all pet food was alike.  I became a detective and made it a point to personally meet the owners and founders of this relatively new company. Then I met the product formulator, a veterinarian that truly cares about the health of our pets.  I enthusiastically made the decision to join this team of pet lovers to provide solutions to pet parents like myself who want to have their pets live long, healthy, happy lives.

Blizzard has passed on after 14 years of blessing those he met. Now I get to work from home with

Schatzi, another Eskie and dynamic diva who has been raised on holistic products. She quickly became a Champion in the show ring and earned other performance titles with her happy attitude and diva presence leading her to stardom. Schatzi has also been an awesome therapy dog. Nursing home patients love to run their fingers through her luxurious coat.

I have a flexible schedule to both work and spend valued time with my family. Before I was spending most of my time with other people’s pets rather than my own. This business and my online presence provide me with an opportunity to meet people very much like me, and help them create the lifestyle they dream about.

Schatzi has inspired me to co-author 4 books, one of which became a #1 best seller on Amazon. Check out A Funny Thing Happened While Pet Sitting: Pet Sitting Tails, A True Compilation of “Tales” from members of Pet Sitters International; 3 books in the The Gratitude Book Project: 365 Days of Gratitude, Celebrating Mothers & Motherhood; and Best of Pets. Best of Pets is where you can read more about Schatzi.

American Eskimo story

Schatzi’s stories are told within the pages of this book.

Together Schatzi and I have raised funds for the public off-leash Frostburg Dog Park by offering puppy classes over an 8-year span until the ideal piece of land was allocated by the City of Frostburg. I then designed the park into three sections; for small dogs, large dogs and a center training area where members of the Upper Potomac Valley Kennel Club offer obedience and agility classes.  We worked with a small committee of leaders representing the City of Frostburg, the handicapped dog owners, multiple dog owners and the Foundation for Frostburg to get it built. We continue to raise funds and volunteer for the dog park. We also supported the creation of the Cascade Park Dog Park in my hometown of New Castle, Pennsylvania.

Your own journey continues from here. The next step is for you to begin taking action.  Here is what you can do next…
